What we do & Why we do it

For over 10 years now, Rural and Remote Mental Health has been delivering mental health programs and services to people living and working in rural and remote Australia.

We are a non-for-profit public company limited by guarantee with deductible gift recipient status.

Our three key programs are:

Our program objectives are to:

  • deliver culturally targeted and demonstrably effective prevention programs linked directly to early interventions;
  • raise awareness, reduce mental ill-health stigma and prevent suicides;
  • evaluate and translate the outcomes;
  • educate and train natural helpers and community leaders so as to embed skills and knowledge in these rural and remote communities where access to health and/or mental-health clinicians is either severely limited or non-existent;
  • educate individuals, families and communities with pathways to help.

Rural and remote Australia is marked by unpredictability, isolation, economic and financial uncertainty, incessant change and extreme weather events.

No-one should feel alone and no-one should be left behind.

These challenges can have a serious impact on the mental health of the men and women who live out here. Our communities don’t enjoy the services that urban Australians take for granted.

Rural and Remote Mental Health develops and implements mental health awareness, prevention and intervention programs specifically for rural and remote communities – leaving no-one behind.

Our tailored programs include practical workshops designed to destigmatise mental ill-health and deliver information about mental health, well-being and suicide prevention. We ensure that program knowledge and capability remain embedded at a local level in communities and organisations.

Our work is evidence-based, and follows a Knowledge Translation approach.

Our mental health programs are professionally researched, designed and administered by our team of specialists.

We constantly evaluate our programs to ensure the best and most relevant practice.
